Advice, Advice, Advice.
I’ve had enough mentors along the way, I owe them a lot. But how much advice is too much advice?
Ideate
As a young entrepreneur imposter syndrome is a thing. There are many business owners who have been around longer, more experience, more knowledge.
In my prime of advice collecting I had a series of mentors and advisors on all sorts of topics. From business development, to sales, strategy, agency, design and personal alignment.
This was in year one of the business, when most problems were unknown. I ensured to consult older more experienced people. And wow did they help. So I never regret going out and getting this advice.
Iterate
The word advice actually comes from old Latin and French lineage, with the original intent meaning “to see things differently”. We slowly involved this into the word advice as we know it today. That’s exactly the gift that each mentor has given me.
However, not all advice is good advice. In my years being in business so far, I have learned a few lessons the hard way when it comes to listening and taking advice. The biggest lessons?
Noting when you’re going to get advice
Be aware of how much of the story the advice giver has
Your own bias when sorting through advice
Differing opinions
The difference between friendly and paid advice
